story about a man and his dog and how his life changes around them. there is a simplicity to how a pup loves their owner, its a ZENNESS a simplicity and lack of complication to the relationship, simple need being served by love and desire to please.

i often wondered whether it was better to record ones thoughts through blog or writing then to let it slip through. type='text'>Episode #6 What is Design part 1

Discussing the question; "What is Design" are Architects/Artists

Rick Potestio, http://www.portlandmodern.com/feature_potestio.html
Rick Potestio was perhaps born to be a noted contemporary Portland architect. Raised in a mid-century modern home in the Hillsdale neighborhood, he remembers stacking blocks at the age of six trying to build houses. A source of inspiration at such an age was likely his mother, who had studied architecture and art history at the University of Oregon, and encouraged Rick’s curiosity about design.
Potestio arrived for his freshman year at the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture in 1974. At that time, there were multiple faculty members such as Thomas Hacker and Richard Garfield who had studied and worked under the legendary architect Louis Kahn, and passed on his practice of soulful modern design driven by a constant searching for the proper expression of a building. “There were opposing factions, but they were the most influential at the school,” Potestio remembers.
Rick takes a certain pride and pleasure in being a cyclist in a city crowded with like minded riders. But you won’t find any spandex or Lycra on him, rather a defiantly formal suit. Such formality shows not Potestio’s ego, for his designs are often about yielding from the obvious gesture. But an immaculately tailored suit is a fitting emblem for this architect of Italian descent for whom a passion about quality and beauty are inseparable from every aspect of life.

Brian White, AIA http://arcw.com/ received an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master’s of Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He has also studied abroad in Europe and South America. He was a senior designer in San Francisco, St. Louis, and Portland, OR. before founding architecturew with his partner Michel Weenick with offices in Porltland and Japan.

He has taught at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and the University of Oregon. He is a member of the AIA and a registered Architect in Oregon and California and is NCARB certified.

Gene Sandoval http://pdxnamethebuilding.com/content/gene_sandoval and www.zgf.com
is one of ZGF's newest design partners. His philosophy is based on fresh, holistic and socially responsible ideas. Gene joined the firm in 1989 following his graduation from the University of Oregon. He is responsible for design and design team leadership on architectural, urban design and interiors projects. Gene’s projects include the award-winning Athletic Medicine Center for the University of Oregon, the Portland Transit Mall Revitalization, stations for the Sound Transit Light Rail system in Seattle, and a new mixed-use tower that will be the new home for ZGF's Portland office. Gene was honored as one of Portland's top "40 Under 40" business leaders by the Portland Business Journal.
Gene also lead the design of the site specific glass sculpture “Prismatic Chamber”
Eugene Sandoval, of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, hoped to create a partition that was not only planar but also dimensional in which the glass would be tectonic. "Light defines betweenness," he said. "Glass is a translation of light. We asked, how could we capture light and make a room? Is there a way that a screen could become a vessel of light defining a juncture?"
The effect creates a solidity but also a further awareness of the stratification and compression, as well as a shimmering water-like appearance. This is further enhanced with a few strings of a subtle green that, in the overall piece, creates the elegant optical effect of a tint. As the individual strings gradually shift from horizontal to vertical to horizontal again, the resulting "partition" twists in space.

www.inhabit.com

About

Inhabitat.com is a weblog devoted to the future of design, tracking the innovations in technology, practices and materials that are pushing architecture and home design towards a smarter and more sustainable future.

Inhabitat was started by NYC designer Jill Fehrenbacher as a forum in which to investigate emerging trends in product, interior and architectural design. His architecture and radical ideas for reinventing modern living, from private villas to large-scale social housing to utopian urban plans, still resonate today. Le Corbusier the Art of Architecture is the first major survey in London of the internationally renowned architect in more than 20 years. This timely reassessment presents a wealth of original models, interior settings, drawings, furniture, photographs, films, tapestries, paintings, sculpture and books by designed and written by the architect himself. The Barbican celebrates Le Corbusier with a host of special events, including concerts, films and talks by acclaimed speakers. The last truly utopian urban planning project in London and greatly inspired by his aesthetic, Barbican presents the perfect backdrop to explore the man and his legacy. The Gallery is open every Thursday until 10pm. Meet friends at the Gallery cocktail bar and join architects, designers and others for their personal take on the exhibition.

http://www.barbican.org.uk/lecorbusier

Elsewhere for our New York WK Radio listeners:

In NY New York, NY at the Guggenheim there is going to be a retrospect on Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward that is happening Friday, May 15, 2009 - Sunday, August 23, 2009.

Fifty years after the realization of Frank Lloyd Wright’s renowned design, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum celebrates the golden anniversary of its landmark building with the exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, co-organized by Guggenheim Foundation and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. On view from May 15 through August 23, 2009, the 50th anniversary exhibition brings together sixty-four projects designed by one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, including privately commissioned residences, civic and government buildings, religious and performance spaces. Presented on the spiral ramps of Wright’s museum through a range of mediums—including more than 200 original Frank Lloyd Wright drawings, many of which are on view to the public for the first time, as well as newly commissioned models and digital animations—Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward illuminates Wright’s pioneering concepts of space and reveals the architect’s continuing relevance to contemporary design.

Solomon R. Design for Thought in Mind

A great design has a point of view. A great design will make a clear statement. It’ll be unique in a way that doesn’t necessarily mean it stands out, but it’ll be clear that it has something to say. As such, there will usually people who don’t “like it” and that’s not really a bad thing. A great design isn’t done by committee. I don’t think you can achieve great design if you have to compromise to please many. Design is best done with one clear vision and an enabled designer who everyone involved trusts to bring that vision to life. A great design is clear and to a large degree, invisible. A great design should speak for itself and there should never be any question as to what its purpose is. A great design is written as much as it’s “designed.” The words you choose to use in your designs are as important as anything else that goes into it. A great design is more than “usable.” If you’re shooting for a usable design, you’re simply shooting for average. Every design should be usable, it’s much better to be usable and good. Or great… A great design pays attention to details. If there is one thing I wish I could have on many of the projects I work on is more time and budget to nail down all the little details. A great design isn’t a template. Along the lines of paying attention to details, a great design will address an entire system in as much detail as possible. This is something that you simply can’t do on the “template” level alone. A great design takes time and isn’t cheap. This is fairly obvious, but when it comes to design you do get what your pay for, and, along the same lines, if you rush it, it’ll appear rushed. A great design is never ending. I think, especially when it comes to the web, and interaction design, that a really great design will evolve over time and needs to be looked at, questioned and refined over time. A great design isn’t perfect. If there is one thing you should pay attention to on this list, it’s that striving for perfection in your designs can do much more damage than good. Usually what happens here is that someone isn’t happy because the design isn’t exactly what they wanted to see, and so they want to make changes to bring it in line with that vision. This most often results in compromise to achieve consensus, which also means you’re getting further away from something great.
So, you’re thinking about sprucing up your home, but you don’t know where to start? Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. This is a perfect time of year to freshen things up. Start small – you don’t need to take on a huge project —and something as simple as paint can change the look of space.

Getting started is not a daunting task. Begin by selecting a room, maybe a smaller room if you’re timid – a bedroom, utility, or den. Set your goals. Consider how you intend to use the room. – What activities will occur there? How do you want the room to look? How will the room relate to the rest of your house? How much do you have to spend?

What steps would best accomplish your goals? Painting alone can dramatically change the look of space. Will you use this room in the morning, evening, or both? Should it have a cool or warm feel? And what are your lighting sources and needs? Need more windows or skylights? Pick a color scheme consistent with your vision.

Take your time when looking for paint. Environmental considerations are paramount when it comes to paint choice. Look for a healthy product with a minimum impact of airborne odors. Paints with low VOC (volatile organic compounds) are preferable, and a wide variety of environmentally responsible paint products are available locally through vendors like YOLO Paint. YOLO, a business connected to our community as artists, teachers, and environmentalists, is passionate about and committed to bringing environmental and social values to the workplace. You may access their Website at and shop with confidence and creativity.

Look for paint products with well saturated colors and ease of coverage – no one wants to paint a room 17 times! If you don’t know much about paint there is help. Online resources are an excellent starting point. Devinecolor.com, for instance, offers tips on color selection and schemes and boasts having “The Wisdom of a Woman in Every Can.” Consultations with interior designers or architects are always invaluable.

Keep your goals in mind when choosing colors. Coordinate with floor colors, ceiling colors, transitions, outside colors, even furniture. Blue furniture offers contrast with warm and cool tones, for instance. And it’s smart to focus on furniture with neutral backdrop. Also, don’t forget to make use of art on your walls – select colors which draw attention to your art.

Send email with questions to: FLWisD@gmail.com

Are you contemplating a total renovation? Sometime paint alone just isn’t enough. If so, make a list of considerations. What do you contemplate in terms of lighting, fixtures, access, furniture, quality?

Give lighting some major attention. Lighting is more than just lamps. Overhead lighting adds a whole new dimension to a room update. Update your fixtures!!! Most people have the same lighting apparatus installed in their home during construction. Take advantage of the opportunity to enhance the utility and decorative value of your room’s walls and work areas, including installation of flexible low voltage and colored lighting to enhance the quality of space.

The Internet offers a wide variety of lighting product resources. Ylighting is a modern lighting specialist which offers an extensive selection of modern and contemporary lighting fixtures and chandeliers ideal for residential applications, including European fixtures, ceiling fans, bubble lamps, mini pendants, and monorail lighting systems. Luxlighting <>

content.htm > is a local company located in the Pearl District, which stocks a wide range of quality modern, contemporary and transitional lighting. Luxlighting’s stated goal is to provide customers lighting that brings comfort, function, style (and maybe a bit of whimsy) to their homes and businesses.

MEMORIAL COLISEUM DEMOLITION

We should all be concerned about Sam Adams’ proposal to tear down the Memorial Coliseum. The 50-year old structure is a Portland landmark, completed in 1960 after voters approved an $8 million dollar bond measure. The building was dedicated in January of 1961 to the “advancement of cultural opportunities for the community and to the memory of our veterans of all wars who made the supreme sacrifice." It has served as home for the Buckaroos, Trail Blazers, Pride, Winter Hawks, and Power and hosted the Beatles, NCAA championships, Davis Cup matches, Dews Tour, and Mayor’s Ball. In short, the Coliseum is a historical structure in which the community takes great pride.

Now it has been proposed that the 12,000 seat Coliseum be demolished to make room for a 9,000 seat baseball facility for Merritt Paulson’s Portland Beavers baseball team, which is being dislodged from PGE Park to make room for Paulson’s new Portland Timbers MLS franchise. Opposition to razing Memorial Coliseum comes from a variety of sources, including neighbors, architects, historians, and former governor Vic Atiyeh, who questions the haste of the City’s development decision. The monument consists of a modernistic gray glass aluminum non load-bearing curtain wall cube around a vast central ovular concrete seating bowl. From an architectural perspective the Skidmore Owings Merrill design is a modernist masterpiece.

Certainly the Coliseum and the Portland community are deserving of a public debate far more substantial than the one presently being conducted by the City. The Coliseum is one of the best buildings in our growing city. Portland architecture blogger Brian Libby has urged the city council to preserve the Coliseum as a "jewel" of modern architecture. A final design will come before the City Council on April 21. Libby believes the City is being disingenuous in its efforts to portray the demolition and proposed development as "sustainable."

One of Portland’s award-winning architects, Rick Potestio, agrees with Libby. Potestio calls the proposal to tear down the Coliseum "absolute stupidity." His post can be viewed at

http://chatterbox.typepad.com/portlandarchitecture/2009/04/potestio-tearing-down-coliseum-absolute-stupidity.html. “The MC is both an architecturally historic and artistic statement, a major work of modernism. It is also a war veterans memorial. It was also built by the people of Portland, and is owned by them…Replacing a viable, fully functional, and extremely well built 12,600 seat multipurpose sport and concert venue with a (most likely budget driven, therefore cheap) 9000 seat single purpose/sport stadium makes absolutely no sense…Tearing down the MC tears down more than a building. It tears down a vessel of memories and a monument to remembrance of sacrifice.”

The development approach under way is beneath Portland’s standards. Is it feasible to destroy a respected landmark and make a $50 million dollar, 50-year decision on two days of design charettes and only one evening of meaningful public input? Without neighborhood involvement? Ecoroofs replace conventional roofing with a living, breathing, vegetated roof system consisting of a layer of vegetation and growing medium on top of a synthetic, waterproof membrane. An ecoroof significantly decreases stormwater runoff, saves energy, reduces pollution and erosion, and helps preserve fish habitat. Ecoroofs also absorb carbon dioxide, cool urban heat islands, and filter air pollutants. Ecoroofs increase habitat for birds and insects and provide much needed greenspace for urban dwellers.

Sponsored by the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, and Metro.
